What hardware is needed to track a vehicle locally with GPS?
I am a software developer trying to develop a tracking system for the shuttles that run on my college campus. People will be able to track where the buses are from a web and/or mobile application. I can create the software myself, so there’s no need to buy anything with it integrated. I just need to know what kind of hardware I’ll need to make this happen.
Here are the important things I’m looking for:
-close to real time tracking (under 30-60s would do)
-fairly inexpensive (this is being paid for by a public university, tight budget)
-only needs to track about a 10 mile radius
The idea is to have ~real-time updates on when buses will be at a bus stop so people aren’t waiting outside for long periods of time. I just need to know specifically what I’ll need to place on a bus to track it and what I need on the other end to receive the signal.
You can certainly do this yourself but, quite frankly, you’re reinventing the wheel. Systems are available commercially. Check with any decent 2-way radio shop.
For a do it yourself project, you’ll need the GPS receivers for the vehicle. You’ll need a transmitter that can be interfaced to the GPS reciever to send the location of that vehicle to a computer to display the location on a map. For this youi’ll need a radio system. You can use your own or rent time on a commercial radio system. You can also pay to use the cell phone system. But you will need the infrastructure to get teh information from each vehicle to the computer for display. You’ll need maping software which is also available commercially.
GPS location systems like this aren’t usually completely real time. Vehicle locations are usually updated every 15 to 30 minutes. A particular vehilce can be polled at any time if it’s location is needed. For a continuous update youi’ll need a dedicated radio channel that can handle the data traffic.
I’ve installed these system for city public works departments, city bus systems, and a garbage service. It’s not hard to install a system but I wouldn’t want ot write the code myself.
